The world’s finest clay pots have been manufactured on Crete since Minoan times in the early Bronze Age. Crete is uniquely blessed to produce them, with an abundance of perfect clay. The clay is sieved and sifted until all impurities are removed and it’s as soft as talcum powder. This is the basis for the pots’ quality. Minoan examples were found during the excavation of the place of Knossos on Crete.
Today, they are still produced by family businesses across the island in the traditional fashion.
Hand thrown and shaped, fired using olive and vine wood to temperatures over 1150°C, the process produces pots which allows air movement through the substrate – perfect for your precious plants – yet completely frost resistant.
Cretan pots are not glazed or coated. They do not have an artificial sheen. They are a real tactile experience as well as an aesthetic one. They are the finest terracotta pots in the world. And because they are handmade and hand decorated, each one is unique.
